The pyswinst
Python for S60 extension supports programmatic, non-interactive software installation. Both SIS files and JAR files should be installable, but we have only tried SIS file installation.
The present version uses a mostly fixed set of installation options, of which particularly noteworthy are that installation is always to the E:
drive (tough luck if the drive does not exist), and that upgrades (i.e., replacing software that is already installed) are allowed.
There are two exceptions in that the iUntrusted
and iCapabilities
options may be specified as keyword arguments (named untrusted
and capabilities
, respectively) to the install
method. As far as development tools go you probably want to have both of these options be True
(which is the default), but on Symbian^3 this requires the AllFiles
capability, and hence you may have to specify both as False
instead on Symbian^3, and stick to installing trusted (not self-signed) software.
Both PyS60 v1.4.x and v2 series are supported by this extension.
Stable.
The programs used to test pyswinst
also serve as example programs. There is no API documentation available for pyswinst
. The API is rather simple, though, and the examples should be sufficient to cover it.
Note that auto_installer.py
depends on the fnmatch.py
and miso
libraries, of which neither is included in Nokia's Python for S60 distributions. fnmatch.py
can be acquired from other, compatible Python distributions, and we have also packaged it as a SIS file. Miso downloads are available from the Miso homepage.
For the license under which the software is released, see the license.txt file.
A collection of release builds is available. The py1
builds are for PyS60 1.4.5, and the py2
builds are for the 1.9.x/2.0.0 series. The self
variant is self-signed, with maximum self-signable capabilities. The dev
variant is signable with Symbian's Open Signed Online or with a developer certificate, and has maximum capabilities allowed by Open Signed Online. Note that in this case the self-signed version is rather pointless, as the TrustedUI capability is required for "silent" software installation.
You may or may not find the changelog useful in trying to determine what has changed between releases.
A Git repository of the source code (with change history) is also available, hosted on GitHub at http://github.com/contextlogger/pyswinst.
The software runs on some S60 3rd and 5th Edition and Symbian^3 devices, but we do not know on which ones exactly. The software accesses the SW Installer Launcher ABI, and there are apparently no guarantees as to the binary compatibility for that ABI, neither "neither between platform versions or within a platform version".
The library was created at HIIT.
